“The trigger was love”

Alejandra Taborda met the man who is now her husband in Cali, Colombia. That encounter was what marked the beginning of her migration adventure.
Alejandra was finishing her work period in Turkey when she decided to go visit her homeland, Cali, and that was when life presented her with the man who is now her husband.
Her husband, of Canadian origin, was on vacation in Cali.
Before meeting her husband, Alejandra had never contemplated Canada as the place where she would build a new life. Alejandra’s relationship with her husband began in Cali and was strengthened through technology, maintaining a long-distance relationship for almost two years; this connection led them to understand that they were destined to live together.
In October 2021, Alejandra arrives in Vancouver, Canada to meet with her partner and begins to live the odyssey that migration entails.
One of the barriers she encounters along her path is the impossibility of finding a job in her area of expertise; this caused an attack on her self-esteem and nights of crying. Facing a mild grief over the loss of status, which many immigrants face when we arrive in the host country.
Another of the barriers she has encountered along her path is the impossibility of building relationships or connections with native people, which represents a rupture with the place of arrival by slowing down her absorption and assimilation of the new culture.
After five years of experiences in Canada, Alejandra continues navigating the waters of migration, between the peace that Vancouver offers her and the longing for a homeland where everything she loved and loves lives. Balancing her life between here and there.
