Angie Martinez

“I don’t identify with Colombian stereotypes”

When being a nomad is in your veins.
Angie, like Marco Polo, is a nomad who wants to know the world; she began traveling at an early age, getting to know cultures that every day confirmed to her that her future was outside the country that saw her born.
But even so, coming face to face with other cultures and other worlds is not easy, because it calls into question one’s own certainties that coming face to face with the other entails.
Finding the barrier that “the other” often does not want their world to be shared with the person who holds another culture. In Canada she saw racism head-on, feeling how it prevented her from belonging to study groups, making her academic path more complicated.
She has also faced the stereotypes associated with Latinos and Colombian women, which makes her question why people want to impose a foreign identity on her.
Here in Canada she created her own business and feels that for now she can take a pause from her travels, before the new call to adventure knocks at her door.
